The benefits of crowns & bridges

Crowns are a safe and easy way to fix broken and discoloured teeth without requiring major surgery. While bridges bind to crowns to eliminate gaps where teeth once were. Dentists can create crowns and bridges that match your teeth colour so no one will know you had any dental procedures. If this sounds like a treatment you wish to have done, book a consultation with a local dentist to discuss the best way to treat your teeth.

So how do crowns & bridges work??

Crowns are ‘caps’ that fit overtop of damaged teeth. The decaying or broken tooth will be shaped down to a peg so that the crown can easily be placed over it. The crown is shaped to look like your previous tooth and can be made out of porcelain, ceramic, acrylic, gold, or metal alloys. Porcelain and ceramic crowns may be a little more expense, but they can be matched to the existing colour of your teeth.

Tooth bridges involve a more complex procedure where a bridge is fastened to two adjacent crowns eliminate any gaps in teeth. The crowns act as anchors for a bridge, which is a false tooth that is eventually fused to the crowns. Similar to the crowns, bridges can be made out of porcelain or ceramic in order to match the colour of existing teeth.

Preparation

Getting a crown or a bridge procedure done will take two appointments to complete. At the first appointment, you will consult your dentist and deciding the best material to use for your situation. After you and your dentist decide the best crown to use, they will either file your tooth down or fill it in, so that the crown can fit perfectly. The dentist will then take an impression of the tooth and the teeth around it and send it to a lab so that a personalized crown can be made. A temporary crown will be placed on the tooth until your permanent one is ready.

Procedure

After a couple weeks, your permanent crown will arrive at your dentist’s office ready to be installed. At your second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and fasten the new crown into place with some adhesives. Your new crown may feel uncomfortable at first, but after a little time it should begin to feel and look normal.

Tooth bridges follow a similar procedure, however once the permanent crowns are fastened your dentist will fuse the new tooth to the crowns eliminating any gaps that used to be there. For both procedures, your dentist will inject a local anesthetic into the gums surrounding the teeth being operated on so that you won’t feel anything during the procedure.

Aftercare

Once the permanent crowns and bridges are installed they should stay in place for the rest of your life. However, if poorly maintained the crowns can loosen and even fall out. Therefore, it is important to maintain proper dental hygiene so that you don’t have to repeat the procedure.

Cost

Crowns and Bridges are affordable and safe ways to fix broken and missing teeth. The prices range from £500 to £1000 depending on the dentist you are using and how extensive the work is. Also, some dentists will offer payment plans to make it even more affordable.
