Stained Teeth

Stained teeth are the result of foods and drinks that leave teeth looking discoloured. There are two types of stained teeth: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic tooth discolouration occurs when the enamel surrounding the tooth becomes stained. Whereas intrinsic discolouration occurs when the inner structure of tooth becomes stained. A dentist can determine if you have stained teeth just by looking at your mouth and seeing yellow or brown streaks across your teeth.

  • Stains can be either intrinsic or extrinsic
  • Usually the result of certain drinks and smoking
  • A cosmetic procedure best fixed by using teeth whitening

Who does it affect?

Anyone over the age of 13 can suffer from stained and discoloured teeth. However, if a child begins to develop stained teeth take them to see a dentist as it doesn’t begin until your teeth are completely grown. People who drink coffee, wine, and soda or who smoke cigarettes are most susceptible to stained teeth.

How to treat it

Brushing, flossing, and cleaning your teeth after meals are the best way to prevent stained teeth from occurring. However, if you are already seeing signs of staining and are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth a dentist may recommend teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that most dentist will be willing to perform for you. Also, for deep intrinsic stains, your dentist may recommend getting a veneer to fix the issue.
